Juniper Park\TBWA claims Bronze Clio for “Day of the Dead Journalists” Campaign

TORONTO; September 20, 2019 -- Juniper Park\TBWA, The Disruption® Company, has won Bronze for its “Day of the Dead Journalists” campaign for the non-profit organization International Freedom of Expression Exchange (IFEX) in the Print & Out of Home Technique category at this year’s Clio Awards.
Founded in 1959, The Clio Awards is the esteemed international awards competition for the creative business, celebrating high achievement in advertising. This award is one of a total of 29 being taken home overall by teams across the TBWA collective this year; 7 Gold, 9 Silver and 13 Bronze.
The winning campaign was launched on November 2, 2018 during the “Day of the Dead” celebrations in Mexico - which just happened to coincide with the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists.
To shed light on the rising violence against journalists in the country and IFEX’s work to fight on their behalf, the team at Juniper Park\TBWA created a poster and social campaign featuring journalist-inspired versions of the iconic Mexican Sugar Skull, ubiquitous with the “Day of the Dead.”
The posters were strategically placed along the parade route to target participants. Illustrated and designed to work together as an authentic Mexican art piece, the posters could be put together in multiple tiled arrangements to create a singular piece of communication.
“Our goal was to keep the memory of the murdered journalists, and their cases, alive,” says Hylton Mann, Group Creative Director at Juniper Park\TBWA. “So on the very day people gathered to remember their dead, we were there to remind them of the reporters who lost their lives doing their jobs - reporting the truth. That should never be forgotten.”
The campaign also won a Merit award at the ADC Awards earlier this year.
Adding to a successful year of honours ranging from Honouree at the Webby Awards to Bronze at the Effie Awards, Juniper Park\TBWA’s latest award reflects its ongoing commitment to developing disruptive ideas that locate and involve brands in culture.
